About the industry

Artisans are masters of their craft and create products such as clothing, toys, tools or furnishings. These artisanal techniques are generally learnted through decades of tribal knowledge and passed down through families/friends.

During the years of lock-down, many individuals had to work from home due to the travel restrictions and most had spare time on their hands.

With time on people’s hands a lot of them started a small hobby, or side hustle, selling home-grown/made produce, from cheeses to gin, to paintings and furniture. As the pandemic progressed and the lock-down lengthened, their was an explosion of Artisan Producers creating and sending out items to the people nationwide. But, with the concern of global warming increasing, consumers are starting to research into where products come from and what material they are made out of. Products sourced locally or made with recycled material have become increasingly popular and users are turning to ethically and sustainably sourced options.

What are some examples of artisan products?

  • Ceramics and Pottery: These objects are mainly produced from clay, which is baked at very high temperatures.
  • Textiles: This is one of the most popular artisan trades.
  • Wood: Another popular choice among Artisan Producers. From furniture to models, wood can be used in many different ways.
  • Metalworking: Iron, steel, and tin are among the common metals used.
  • Goldsmith: This artisan technique uses the precious metals such as gold, silver, or bronze. Commonly used to make jewellery.
  • Carton and Paper: A popular choice to make cards, posters, postcards, and even origami projects for children.
  • Glass: Not so popular but still used. It generally requires a lot of expertise to melt glass and form it into a shape.
  • Food: This was a big one during the pandemic, with artisan producers making and selling food to consumers.

These are just examples of some of the Artisan techniques used.

The Importance of artisan packaging

Artisan packaging design has become a huge trend in recent years and is still increasing.

The packaging often includes elements such as Kraft paper, natural muted colors and minimalstic designs. It demonstrates the need for authenticity and simplicity in consumer packaging.

Through its packaging, an artisan producer can immediately communicate there skills, craftmanship and quality. The packaging plays an important part in differentiating your brand from competitors.
